Composition in Two Genres

 

First Genre: Political Cartoon

Genre: Political cartoon was chosen as the ideal genre to reach the audience. Political leaders are more likely to investigate what the public has to say through a political cartoon.

Rhetorical Situation: The urgent issue of air pollution is of most importance because it is harming the people of China. They are the ones being exposed to harmful air born particles every day and the only way to protect themselves is by wearing masks. Criticism of the Chinese government through a political cartoon will help get a message through to the political leaders.

Purpose: The purpose of this political cartoon is to have the political leaders do more to help fight against air pollution in China. They have the power to improve the condition in China by reducing the amount of coal power plants in the country as well as reduce car emissions. Millions of people, including families, are forced to wear masks to protect themselves from the harmful PM2.5 particles in the air. Also, the purpose of this political cartoon is to criticize the Chinese economy as it is making most of its wealth off oil that releases greenhouse gasses into the air and the people of China are forced to deal with it and put a mask on to protect themselves from car emissions.

Audience: This political cartoon appeals to the political leaders of China who are the main reason that China has become such a heavily polluted country. The economy of China relies too much on non-renewable resources that release harmful emissions into the air. Also, this political cartoon can best be understood by political leaders. These political leaders are aware of air pollution in China and what PM2.5 particles and how bad the concentration of PM2.5 particles are in the cities of China. They have the background knowledge to understand what this political cartoon means to its fullest.

Stance: This political cartoon takes the stance that the people of China are being affected by pollution in China and their whole economy revolves around non-renewable resources. Due to rapid industrialization, China’s economy gained huge wealth. However, the downside is that this wealth is all thanks to pollution and something needs to be done.

 

 

Second Genre: Subway AD

Genre: The genre is an AD on subway trains. This genre was chosen because my audience which is most likely to see these ads on the subway trains that they take to work.

Rhetorical Situation: Emotion can be used to show urgency. People of China are forced to wear masks in the polluted cities and this might change into them wearing gas masks. High concentrations of the harmful PM2.5 particle can cause health issues and thus masks need to be worn. The people of China need to act and take matter into their own hands for a huge difference to be made in the quality of air in China.

Purpose: The purpose of this ad is to persuade the audience to act towards air pollution. They are the ones that are being affected and future generations are also being affected by air pollution. Showing the likelihood of what China can become evokes fear into the hearts of the people and that they need to do something about it.

Audience: The audience for this subway ad is middle age working citizens of China. This ad best reflects the choice of the audience because the audience is likely to take the train to work and see this ad. The colors of the letters also attract the audience attention and when on a train, people don’t have much to do but looked around at the ads on the train.

Stance: The stance taken is that change in the air quality of China is needed. The people are the ones that have a voice in their government and with that voice, they can speak out for more action to be taken.
